It’s awfully dangerous out there on our South Florida roadways. According to the Miami Herald, there were three people killed in one recent weekend.
Coral Springs detectives investigated a serious accident between a motor vehicle and a bicyclist on the northbound lanes of the Sawgrass Expressway at State Road 7. Miami officials looked into an accident involved an SUV and a truck and Broward officials looked into two fatal single car accidents.
Our Coral Springs bicycle accident lawyers understand that traffic can be a headache for all of us. Unfortunately, it’s often cyclists who face the brunt of it. Since bicyclists are much more vulnerable in the event of a traffic accident, they’re oftentimes much more seriously injured or killed. With the Spring season approaching, we’re facing some of the busiest times on our roadways for these kinds of accidents. It’s time we focus in on bicycle safety before it’s too late.
According to the Sun Sentinel, we can expect thousands of bicyclists and runners/walkers in the area for the fifth Tour de Broward at Miramar Regional Park this year.
This year’s event will take place on February 23rd. We’re encouraging travelers of all kinds to keep safety a top priority. We’re all here for a good cause, and we need to continue our focus on bettering travel of everyone.
Last year, there were roughly 2,000 participants to the event. In the past, it has assisted with funding for the DiMaggio Children’s Hospital facility in Hollywood. Since that construction is complete, event officials are working to help out the pediatric cardiac center. Last year, the event raised more than $350,000 for the fund.
If the Tour de Broward isn’t exactly your style, there are many more bicycling events here in South Florida. Check out MeetUp for a complete list of local biking events, including CycleHolics, Get Out There Adventures and Camp Gear Life. Get involved!
The hard truth is that bicycles and cars don’t mix well. Drivers should always keep a sharp eye out for bicycles, especially in intersections and driveways. And allow plenty of room if you are passing a bicycle. If you are riding a bicycle then always wear a helmet, it could easily save your life. Keep safety a number one priority, no matter how you travel.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV), there were close to 100 bicyclists killed in the state of Florida in 2010. In addition, there were another 2,600 injured (serving as a close to 4 percent increase from the previous). Overall, there were close to 5,000 bicycle-traffic accidents recorded in the state in 2010. But those are only the ones that were reported. Officials believe that there are many more accidents that go unreported.
